Positioned in the City of Westminster in London, the popular London Westend Palace Theatre has been a name since the late 1880s.  The magnificent London Theatre has been a wonderful theatrical experience for people all across the globe. The immensely acclaimed operas, Gilbert and Sullivan’s producer Richard D’Oyly Carte commissioned the theatre during late 1880s.

In the year 1891, the theatre marked its debut as Royal English Opera House. Arthur Sullivan’s famous opera, Ivanhoe was hosted in  a grand manner at the newly debut theatre. The opera ran successfully with 160 performances. However, it was followed by Andre Messager’s La  Basoche. For a season, this magnificent theatre was leased to Sara Bernhardth, as there was no work at that moment.

The huge theatre was transformed into a awesome music hall and was renamed as Palace Theatre of Varieties. The theatre was initially managed by Sir Augustus Harris followed Charles Morton. During the later phase of theatre, it also started screening movies as entertainment programmer. Year 1904 continued the presentation of variety entertainment which comprises of dancing girls along with movies screening. From the year 1900 to 1920, Herman Finck was the musical director.

Year 1925 marked the debut of the popular musical comedy, No, No, Nanettte at the famous London Westend Palace Theatre. In the year 1931, Marx Brother made its debut on the theater and performed some selected Broadway shows. One of the most successful show was The Sound of Music and had a huge run of 2,385. The show made its debut at the Palace Theatre in the year 1961.

Jesus Christ Superstar was another immensely loved London Westend show as it enjoyed run from 1972 to 1980. In the year 1985, another blockbuster made record history was Les Miserables and it went on running for almost nineteen years. Year 1991 marked the refurbishment of the theatre, as Andrew Lloyd Webber bought it in the year 1983.

Some other famous shows of Palace Theatre are Monty Python’s Spamalot, as it ran from from 2006 until January 2009, and Priscilla Queen of the Desert. In the year 2009, the show made its debut in the month of
March 2009 and closed in December 2011. Production of Singin’ in the Rain was another big presentation of Palace Theatre London as it ran from February 2012 till June 2013.  Currently, the magnificent historic theatre is  hosting Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. The show marked its debut on June 2016 and enjoyed a successful run. However, the performances of the play Harry Potter and the Cursed were suspended in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
